The temple of Pashupati is an important and popular Hindu shrine. This is the most revered and widely venerated God of the Hindus and is situated on the east of Kathmandu City on the right bank of the holy river Bagmati. This two-storied temple is the best example of the Nepalese temple architectural design. This temple is decorated and covered with artistically designed gold, silver and bronze plates. Although the Pashupati area had already been developed as a holy pilgrim site since Lichhavi period, the present shape of the temple which we see today, is three hundred years old. Pashupati area has numerous temples of different styles erected during a long span of time. They are Panchadeval, Jayabageshwari temple, Tamreshwar Mahadeva, Guheshwari temple, Vishwarupa, Shivalayas and Ghats which are located on the either banks of Bagmati River. Stone sculptures with high artistic quality and religious values are found here in abundance. These remarkable and outstanding monuments do represent different historical times starting from the 3rd –4th century AD to the present.
