The
temple of Pashupati is an important and popular Hindu shrine. This
is the most revered and widely venerated God of the Hindus and is
situated on the east of Kathmandu City on the right bank of the
holy river Bagmati. This two-storied temple is the best example
of the Nepalese temple architectural design. This temple is decorated
and covered with artistically designed gold, silver and bronze plates.
Although the Pashupati area had already been developed as a holy
pilgrim site since Lichhavi period, the present shape of the temple
which we see today, is three hundred years old. Pashupati area has
numerous temples of different styles erected during a long span
of time. They are Panchadeval, Jayabageshwari temple, Tamreshwar
Mahadeva, Guheshwari temple, Vishwarupa, Shivalayas and Ghats which
are located on the either banks of Bagmati River. Stone sculptures
with high artistic quality and religious values are found here in
abundance. These remarkable and outstanding monuments do represent
different historical times starting from the 3rd –4th century
AD to the present.
